8 Things You’ll Need When Moving from College to NYC

by | Jun 28, 2017

When moving to a new city, the smallest things can slip through the cracks, from a toaster to a bath mat and everything in between. This is especially difficult when making the big move from college to the Big Apple. Here are the eight things you’ll need when making the move from college to NYC.

1. Check List Checklist

It’s only natural to forget a few things when moving. Most of the time it’s stuff that you can buy wherever you are. However, to save money and reduce stress, make a check list. Moving isn’t a one-day ordeal, it can take a few weeks to get everything just right.

2. Something That Reminds You of HomeTeddyBear

Whether you’ve been on your own already or not, it’s only natural to get homesick (especially in the city). Don’t hesitate to bring something that reminds you of home, such as a teddy bear, blanket, picture, or sentimental knick-knack. Being on your own in a new city can be overwhelming, so having something familiar to comfort you is a must.

3. Power SourcesPowerSource

Most of the buildings in New York were built before the tech boom, so there might not be many wall outlets. What you may have taken for granted in college may not exist in your new plugs, so bring extension cords, power strips, and surge protectors.

There’s nothing worse than getting “stranded” without your phone. When trying to navigate NYC, bringing your phone with you as a map makes it easy and enjoyable. However, when your phone dies, navigation becomes a little more difficult. Invest in a reliable portable power charger for your phone.

4. Storage OptionsStorage

Apartments are small. Don’t try to bring everything at once. Bring your essentials; toiletries, sheets, pillows, clothes (for that season only), shoes (make sure they’re comfy… you’ll be walking a lot), and anything else that’s critical. Worry about the rest later.

Similarly, invest in some storage units for your room. Whether it’s plastic boxes to slide under your bed or stack against the wall like drawers, you’re going to want as much storage as your space allows.

5. Shower CurtainShowerCurtain

When moving, there’s so much going on and so many things to remember that even the simplest thing like a shower curtain gets forgotten. When moving into your new place, remember the shower curtain… you’ll quickly realize how hard it is to have a shower without one.

6. KitchenwareUtensils

The last thing you want is to have to eat with your fingers after moving all day. Don’t forget to bring (at least) one spoon, fork, and knife. You can always pick up more cutlery later, but while you’re getting settled its important that you have some utensils.

7. MirrorMirror

A good full-body mirror is essential. Whether it’s going on a date or going to work, you never want to walk out without checking yourself out in the mirror for any embarrassing wardrobe malfunctions. The dorm bathroom mirror may have worked while you were in college but now it’s time to invest in a proper, well-made mirror!

8. LightingLight

During the day, there’s plenty of light but it gets dark quickly, so good lighting is a must. Find a cute and functional lamp (or two) to add to your space.
