A Day in the Village: 7 Activities for Those on a Budget

by | Jul 1, 2016

We’ve all been in this situation: we only have 5 dollars and 6 pennies in our pocket, and we’re aimlessly walking around NYC thinking about what to do or what to eat. However, lucky for everybody, there are a plethora of activities that are fairly cheap or free. Here are some great options of what to do in Greenwich Village for those on a budget.

Chess At Washington Square Park

Playing chess at a beautiful park only costs $5, and at almost any time of day, there will always be someone willing to be your opponent. Chess has been played in Washington Square Park for over 100 years.

Walk Down West 10th Streetimage-14

This beautiful tree-lined street features elegant Federalist-style townhouses (numbers 20 to 38) designed by James Renwick in 1856-58. It’s a must-see for architecture aficionados and history buffs. (Shown is 21 West 10th Street, once part of John Jacob Astor’s estate.)

Take A Gastro Tour Through Greenwich Village (..okay spend a little)

Nibble your way through the best specialty food shops, starting on Bleecker Street between 6th Avenue and 7th Avenue. There you will find Murray’s Cheese, Amy’s Bread, and Rocco’s Pastry. Other Village staples include specialty shops like Raffetto’s, Faicco, Porto Rico Importing Company, Ottomanelli’s Meat Market, Li-Lac Candy Store, and the legendary McNulty’s Tea and Coffee.

See A Performance At Le Poisson Rouge

Located on Bleecker Street, this famous arts venue hosts modern and experimental performances that keep the Village on the edge of the arts scene.

Thelewala

This is the Village chaat joint. It serves a great mix of vegetarian and non-vegi options. Plus, the bhel puri only costs $5.50.

Arturo’s Coal Oven Pizza

Since 1957, Arturo’s has spat out top-notch, thin crust pies from its coal-fired oven. We would call the decor Village-kooky, with wooden booths and paintings covering the walls. During dinner hours, there’s a good chance you’ll catch a jam session from a Village jazz duo.

Il Mulino

Grab a cocktail at one of the Il Mulino bars and they’ll hook you up with some free rosemary truffle oil potato chips that are to die for.AdwordsLeaderboard728x90
