A History of the Fairfax Building

by | Feb 6, 2015

The Fairfax building was built in 1927. Located at 201 East 69th Street, the architecture is simple brown brick with a three story limestone foundation. The building has few flourishes most likely due to the fact that it was originally built to house silver. You can see the difference between this and other 1920s architecture in the area by comparing it to the Barbizon Hotel for Women. Built in the same year, the Barbizon is much taller, and grander with peaked arches and terracotta embellishments.

This location once housed the FBI’s New York City Headquarters. In 1980 it was converted into a residential building. Due to the original nature of the building, even with renovations, the units remain unique in size and shape. This is very desirable, especially in the neighborhood of the Upper East Side, because most apartments in that area have a more basic layout. This is one of the only buildings in the area where you can get a downtown loft feel. 315 apartments over 16 floors give you one of the most diverse mixes of units in one building in the entire city.

Now owned by TF Cornerstone, the building has all of the amenities required for a modern day luxury building. The stunning, two-floor lobby is lined with rich wood and multi-tonal stone for a striking effect upon entering. Then one of the three speedy elevators will whisk you away to the upper floors where you will find 9-foot beamed ceilings and sound-resistant and expansive windows. Units boast massive closet space, oak hardwood flooring, and self-controlled heating and cooling systems. Some units also include private terraces. The sleek kitchens have stainless steel appliances including a dishwasher. Marble bathrooms have soaking tubs in addition to shower stalls and stainless steel fixtures.

There is 24-hour doorman service as well as video surveillance for security reasons. Tenants  can also enjoy the fitness center and roof deck. Functionally, the building provides a laundry room, storage units, concierge, and full-service parking garage with valet service.

The Fairfax offers residents a unique background as well as contemporary conveniences. Studios, one, two, and three bedrooms are all available starting at $3,195/month.
