Empire State Building

by | Jun 9, 2016

Standing as one of the tallest building in New York and named one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, the Empire State Building is an American cultural icon. Open 365 days a year from 8AM-2PM, many people consider the Empire State Building (ESB) to be the heart of New York, and no visit to NYC can be complete without seeing this amazing tower.

headerErected in 1931, the ESB for a long span of time was considered the world’s tallest building until it was surpassed by the World Trade Center in 1970. Developed by John Thompson Farm and designed by William F. Lamb, construction took 3,400 workers only one year to complete.

The building is used for a variety of purposes. It houses broadcasting stations, art galleries, business offices, and of course the observation deck for visitors.

One of the most iconic features of the ESB, aside from its gorgeous views and it’s tall stature, is its lines. Deemed “legendary” by some, the lines are long and many.

There are 5 lines. The sidewalk line, lobby elevator line, ticket purchase line, second elevator line, and leaving the elevator line. There are options to purchase special tickets to go to the front of the line, but the prices can reach up to the hundreds.

The skyscraper has also been featured in numerous television shows, movies, and songs. Sleepless in Seattle and King Kong being a just a few.

The ESB can be seen almost anywhere in Manhattan. This gives its tower lights high value for any business or holiday. Added in 1964, the floodlights were initially added to the ESB to illuminate the top of the building at night. However, since 1976, the lights have been used to match holiday events or to commemorate achievements or losses.

Located in Midtown East, the Empire State Building is an icon within New York. Catch it at the corner of your eye as you walk to work, take a picture of its amazing lights at night, or simply wait in line for the observation deck. No matter where you are, the ESB will always stand tall.
