How to Decorate a Small Bedroom Space

by | Jun 6, 2016

City living means small apartments. That usually translates into small bedrooms without enough space, but that doesn’t mean you can’t create a dreamy area. We’re here to help! Here are some design tips to help you make the most out of your small bedroom.

headerPick a Focal Point

Every room needs a focal point, and the bedroom is no different. Since the bed is likely the piece that will take up the biggest footprint, it’s only natural that it’ll be the focal point of the room. When decorating, start with the bed (frame, headboard, linens) and work your way outwards.

Reflect on Things

Add mirrors and reflective surfaces to really open up your space. By reflecting natural and man-made light, mirrored surfaces give the illusion of a larger space. You can place a large mirror in the corner of your room or go with a trendy mirrored furniture piece. Whatever you do, adding reflective surfaces will make your bedroom space look larger than it truly is.

Underbed Storage

Seasonal items don’t have to be all over. Space under your bed is the perfect storage area for things you don’t use every day. Basic plastic storage bins are an easy way to stash things underneath. For a more stylish option, go with a captain’s bed with drawers or a bed with a frame that lifts up to reveal a storage area.

Use Your Walls

The tinier your bedroom, the more floor space is at a premium. This is where your walls come into play. Your walls are really just extra vertical square footage. Install shelves or a hanging garment rack (if you lack closet space) and store everything you need there. Think floating shelves for shoes or crates to store your tees.

Space Saving Furniture

Furniture is essential for your bedroom. At the very least, you need a bed and a dresser. When choosing a bed, keep your space size in mind. If you have a tiny apartment, you may want to go with a loft bed. For a dresser, think vertical; a tall dresser will store a ton without taking up much floor space.

Go Bold

Having a small bedroom that’s generally out of eyesight means you can really do what you want. Paint your walls a bold color or add some fun printed wallpaper to make a statement. Add some personal touches to really make everything pop.

Embrace its Size

Yes, your bedroom is small, but it’s unlikely you’ll be able to change its size. So embrace it and get creative. It’s your little heaven away from the world, where you can recharge for the next day!
