How to Give Back to Your NYC Community This Thanksgiving

by | Nov 15, 2017

Thanksgiving is one of the few times during the year when we actively make ourselves aware of the people and things that we’re thankful for. Volunteering or donating to charity is a great way to show our thanks this holiday season.

There’s nothing better than that rewarding feeling you get after helping someone in need. While it can be hard to find the right cause that fits your beliefs and skills, we’ve pulled together a list of ways you can give back this Thanksgiving.

Before you indulge with an overload of turkey, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce, why don’t you feed those who aren’t as fortunate? Helping out at a soup kitchen, whether it’s around the busy Thanksgiving season or just any time during the year, is a great way to give back and meet the people you’re helping.

Spend Time With Animals

It’s not only humans that are in need. Consider spending this holiday season with some dogs, petting them and giving them a little love at a place like Muddy Paws Rescue.

This nonprofit works with animal shelters around the city and finds dogs a new home. So if you happen to fall in love with one of them, stay in touch to see if you can take them home with you!

You’ve probably already made a list of all the pies you’re going to make for Thanksgiving, so why not just bake more than your family can eat and bring your additional baked goods to a local police station, veteran home, or senior home? Homemade food makes any heart melt and will put a smile on their faces. Day made.

Another organization that is always in need of volunteer work and donations is Women in Need NYC.

This organization has been helping homeless women and children for more than three decades, and lists several ways of helping them out on their website. These range from making financial donations to helping out at one of their shelters or making an in-kind donation.

There are countless ways you can be charitable on Thanksgiving, whether it’s in a financial sense or by offering your labor. Just remember, Thanksgiving isn’t the only day of the year your help is appreciated.

In fact, Time Money reported in 2015 that charity organizations are a bit overrun by volunteers on Thanksgiving and would prefer to have helping hands on any other day of the year. Keep this in mind when you have time to make a difference.
