Meet The TripleMint Team: Eric Barron

by | Nov 28, 2016

This week we sat down with Chief Revenue Officer Eric Barron. We learned about his colored career and his family while getting some sound advice.IMG_5932
Where are you from?

I grew up in Brooklyn.

A New Yorker through and through.

Yes. Brooklyn, New York, not Brooklyn, Kansas. Wait, no; there’s a Manhattan, Kansas. But yes, I grew up in Brooklyn, New York.

Did you ever leave New York or have you been a New Yorker all your life?

Well, I went to school in St. Louis  Washington University. I also did a semester abroad in London. As soon as I graduated, I came right back to work for ABC radio, which was the Yankee flagship station at the time.

What did you do at ABC Radio?

My parents always said I should follow my passions and turn that into my career, thus the sports angle. I graduated with a psychology major, and I knew I was not going to get my Masters or go for a Ph.D. Like many young adults who are undecided, I contemplated law school and getting an MBA. I’ve never been one to take the “safe” route and thus focused on Ad Sales until I literally fell into the mortgage industry.

When did you shift to residential real estate?

I started in the early 90s on the mortgage side. This was my first taste of being an entrepreneur and being in business for myself. There was no salary, and I had to generate 100% of the business on my own, mostly from real estate agents. It was a ton of fun, and I can truly tell you I’m happiest when engaging and connecting with other people.

In the late 90s, while heading up sales for The New York Mortgage Company, I started to do a ton of training for real estate agents, much of which revolved around the DiSC behavioral styles. I spent a few years mastering DiSC and really enjoying the training and coaching side of the business. Over the next decade in the mortgage industry, I put thousands of agents and dozens of companies through some sort of training involving DiSC. My passion for human behavior and it’s relationship to leadership, personal branding, networking, etc, carried me into full-time coaching and consulting in and out of real estate from 2007 to 2011, when I took over the Keller Williams Manhattan launch. To be frank, I’m not a big fan of large companies, particularly when it comes to bureaucratic BS. However, there were enough intriguing things about Keller’s business model and culture to warrant the change. After a great 4 year run with Keller, where we grew by 500% and become one of their most profitable regions in the world, it was time to find a new challenge.

How did you end up at TripleMint?

I met David and Phil through Teri Rogers, founder of Brick Underground. She told me, “you gotta meet these two really smart kids.” We met around 2013, and I introduced them to the Keller model and thought there might be some synergies. After a few months of “dating,” we both agreed it was best to remain apart. We kept in contact over the next two years, and when I parted ways with Keller, we revisited the possibilities of working together. I started consulting for them in the fall of 2015 and it very quickly became apparent this could be a win-win partnership.

So did things work out?

So far, so good. We got married in January and share the same strong desires to provide buyers, sellers, and renters with a much more efficient and intelligent process.  IMG_5952
So on the note of marriage, what’s your family like?

I have two kids. One, Zachary, is in 3rd grade and the other, Jacqueline, is in 6th grade. This October will be my 15 year wedding anniversary. I lived in Manhattan for 17-18 years, and as the kids got older we decided to move out to the South Orange, New Jersey area. We’re actually surviving!

Since you’ve lived in the city so long, what’s your favorite neighborhood?

It’s evolved. Early on, Upper West. When it got too crowded, the East Village. When that got too crowded, Union Square. Today I would have to say it’s Nomad/Madison Square Park/Flatiron.

How are you liking the Times Square location and the crowds?

You know what, this location works. It’s a 6-minute walk from Penn Station, so at this stage in my life, it couldn’t be better. For commuting purposes, it’s phenomenal. Bryant Park is always a nice escape.

Awesome! What do you like to do in your free time?

I play fantasy football, religiously. I love fantasy football. Obviously, I spend a lot of time with my kids. My daughter plays softball and my son plays everything, but really loves baseball. I also enjoy my cross-fit workouts.

What’s something that most people don’t know about you?

That’s a very deep question. You could have asked my favorite food or favorite color. I’m a pretty open book. But since you’re forcing me to answer – it would have been nice to have a brother or sister.

Last question, what advice would you give to your younger self?

I would say, Stop worrying because most things work out. Be more diligent and efficient with your time. Seek out a couple of really good entrepreneurial mentors.

It’s good advice for us since we’re young.

Haha yeah. We sweat the small stuff way too much. It’s ridiculous.
