Murray Hill: 2015 Neighborhood Guide

by | Feb 26, 2015

Located between the East River and Madison Avenue, from East to West and 42nd street to 34th street, from North to South, Murray Hill is a quiet neighborhood during the day with a cheap bar scene at night.  Comprised of many high-rise commercial and residential buildings, this neighborhood caters to the 9-5 professional crowd as well as to recent college grads drawn toward the numerous doorman buildings, affordable restaurants and happy hour deals.

Accessibility: Murray Hill is served by the 4,5,6 and 7 subway lines. You have easy access to Times Square using either the 7 or Shuttle trains. The area is a commuter’s paradise with the subways and Metro North connections. The 59th Street Bridge makes access to Queens a breeze with a mere 10 minute cab ride.

Lifestyle: Murray Hill has a nice mix of quiet and busy depending on the time of day and your location. If you’re looking to escape, try the East River Greenway for a jog or a relaxing meal. Anything to the east of 2nd avenue will be quieter as it’s further away from the hustle and bustle of Grand Central. Central Murray Hill after sundown is where you want to be if you want to enjoy the bar scene. Be prepared for a casual beer with friends more than a dressy martini kind of atmosphere.

Restaurants and Shops: Although you will find the occasional upscale restaurant, like Dock’s Oyster Bar, Murray Hill is more about small cafes and pubs. Try Salvation Taco for the best Mexican food this neighborhood has to offer. If you’re looking for that 5th Avenue shopping experience, you won’t find it here. Look forward to mom and pop stores and vintage shops when perusing these streets.

Cost of living: Although the median rent for a one bedroom apartment is $3,200 you get a lot of bang for your buck here. There are many moderately priced high-rise apartments in the neighborhood serviced by doormen as well as less expensive walk-ups. Many of the rental buildings allow temporary walls, allowing 3 people to share the price of a 3-bedroom. If you’re looking to buy, median sales are around $660,000 which is well below the $1 million median for NYC as a whole. If you want to take advantage of a reasonably priced New York City home, Murray Hill might just be the place for you.
