[NYC History] The History of the Financial District

The Financial District is located in Manhattan on the southeastern side of the city. The neighborhood is made up of mostly offices for the city’s major financial institutions. The reconstruction of the world trade centers and memorial have added to other local landmarks such as the New York Stock Exchange, and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

In the early 20th century, the area was known as the Insurance District because of the large number of insurance companies based out of the area. The inauguration of George Washington to presidency as the first President of the United States took place in the Financial District at the corner of Wall Street and Nassau Street,

In the early 2000’s, the area began to see an influx of residential tenants with the conversions of office space to apartments. In 2001 there were 15 to 20 thousand full time residents in the area, compared to the 56 thousand living in the area in 2008.

Tourist attractions have also been welcomed to the area with South Street Seaport, New York City Police Museum, and the Museum of American Finance.
