Rock Legend Jimi Hendrix’s Apartment Sells

by | Aug 17, 2016

The one and only Jimi Hendrix once called 59 West 12th Street his home. It has been rumored that Hendrix came back to this very spot after playing Woodstock in 1969, but that may be more urban legend than anything else at this point.

The condo was originally listed back in November 2013 for $5.595 million but was taken off the market after four months without finding any buyers. It took the previous owners another eighteen months before they would relist the apartment, and they upped the ante a little bit this time by listing the property at $6.595 million in October 2015. The sellers only held that price for about a month before dropping the asking price by 5% to $6.250 million.

Over the next six months, the listing would drop a couple more times before settling at $5.5 million once again. That price range seemed to be the sweet spot since it generated enough interest to secure a buyer.

The home is just over 2,200 square feet with three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The unit was sold for $5.6 million. Besides the respectable selling price, the new owners will also have monthly carrying costs of nearly $4,800 per month between the monthly maintenance costs and taxes, welcome home.

Unfortunately or fortunately (depending on your point of view), the apartment appears to have been significantly renovated since the days of Hendrix. Which makes sense; no one wants to live in a circa 1960’s style apartment, but it would have been nice if they could have kept some of the charm from Hendrix’s time in the apartment. There is only one Jimi Hendrix.

The building has 103 units spread out over 17 stories. This highly sought after Greenwich Village locale was first built in 1931 but has undergone several transformations since then. The building is literally steps from lower 5th Avenue.

Including amenities such as a 24-hour doorman, a full staff to assist with your day-to-day concerns, storage bins, a building laundry room, a bike room, and a children’s play area, what else could a New Yorker need?
